PLT burger will be offered in 27 restaurants in Kitchener-Waterloo and Guelph — and will be 50 cheaper

McDonald’s Corp. is expanding its Beyond Meat experiment into more restaurants across Southwestern Ontario and extending the company’s first plant-based burger trial to seven months.

In the second leg of the test, the PLT will be 50 cents cheaper, at $5.99. Charette said the drop in price didn’t have to do with customer feedback, but more to see how the change would influence demand. The rollout will also have support from advertising for the first time. McDonald’s wouldn’t reveal sales figures, or where the new burger ranked in popularity compared to classics like the Big Mac and the Quarter Pounder. Charette did say that McDonald’s saw higher demand for the PLT is urban areas. In fact, the only franchisee who declined to continue with the PLT test was in a more rural area, operating three stores around Sarnia, Ont., a McDonald’s spokesperson confirmed.

International analysts have been watching the Ontario pilot closely over the last four months, since the fate of the fledgling sandwich could have a major impact on Beyond Meat’s performance. Several firms have conducted checks on the pilot stores and contacted franchisees to come up with estimates on how many sandwiches they’re selling.
