Prospects for averting a US government shutdown rose in Washington Saturday as the House passed a bipartisan short-term spending deal with just hours to go before a disruptive federal funding lapse.
The measure now heads for a vote in the Senate, which could happen before — or soon after — the midnight deadline if no senators throw up procedural hurdles.
But House Democrats, unhappy with McCarthy’s exclusion of aid to Ukraine and his rush to the floor, hit the brakes and demanded time to review the legislation. The White House has not commented on the legislation. A Republican familiar with McCarthy’s thinking said the speaker’s move is intended to trigger Gaetz into either filing the motion to vacate or backing down. Once he’s dealt with, the person said, McCarthy will have more room to maneuver.
