Columnist Dana Hall McCain on why she thinks Trump should skip a second Senate endorsement ➡️

On Wednesday, many voters were shocked to learn that former president Donald Trump was officially withdrawing his endorsement of Congressman Mo Brooks for the US Senate. There had been rumors of such for weeks, but Brooks continually rebuffed the talk, calling it a “false narrative” spread by his opponents.

That’s how you go from having all the name ID and Trump’s endorsement to third place: by getting out-spentTrump has indicated that he has another announcement coming soon, and most think that means he will endorse one of the other two candidates. But if I were advising him, I’d tell him to slow down.

The race between the two frontrunners is still very fluid, with metric tons of campaign cash and PAC money yet to be spent on behalf of both candidates. We’ve learned from the first three quarters of this ballgame that TV and digital ads are expensive, but they work. With all the spending yet to be done, these polls could be close and slippery all the way to the finish line.

I’d tell him not to overestimate the power of his endorsement to change the outcome of the race. After all, Mo was Trump-endorsed every day of his 40+ point freefall. So I would resist assuming that whatever will go on between Britt and Durant over the next three months can be definitively controlled by anyone. In an August 2021 poll conducted by Cygnal of likely Republican voters in Alabama, a robust 57.7% said that Trump’s endorsement made it more likely that they would support a candidate.
