Chris Young will step down to join private-equity firm TPG as a senior adviser, handing the reins to a new leader who could potentially take the cybersecurity-software company public or pursue a sale

Peter Leav, who was chief executive of enterprise-software company BMC Software Inc. when then-owner Bain Capital sold it to KKR & Co., has been tapped to succeed Mr. Young. Mr. Leav also has held senior titles at Polycom Inc., NCR Corp. and Motorola Inc. He will join McAfee on Feb. 3.
