SAN DIEGO – The long-awaited Comic-Con International convention returns to San Diego, the first time it has been in-person since 2019.
The convention is very popular and brings millions of dollars of tourism revenue to the City of San Diego. Beginning with a few hundred fans in 1970, Comic-Con has become a celebrated San Diego fixture, attracting hundreds of thousands of spectators and bringing global attention to the region. In 2019 alone, Comic-Con welcomed more than 135,000 attendees and generated $3.2 million in hotel and sales tax revenue for the city.
But this year, they are imposing the strictest COVID-19 regulations in the country. All attendees are required to show proof of full vaccination, a negative test, and wear a mask the entire time they are inside. San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria and other elected officials gave speeches kicking off this year’s Comic-Con Thursday from the San Diego Convention Center.The San Diego Convention Center’s official Twitter account shared a video of masked attendees going down the escalator and into the halls.
