‘The bid is signed, we are moving forward’: Olivia Chow backs plan to host World Cup despite Toronto’s budget crisis
Mayor Olivia Chow is standing behind the city’s plan to spend millions of dollars to host the 2026 FIFA Men’s World Cup, despite her own warnings about Toronto’s precarious financial situation and reservations her council allies have expressed about a deal to deliver the tournament.
At a press conference Thursday, Chow confirmed she supports hosting the competition, and predicted it would bring “a lot of excitement to the residents of Toronto.” The mayor, who took office July 12 — more than a year after the 2022 announcement Toronto would co-host the World Cup — noted it would be the first time the hugely popular soccer tournament was played on Canadian soil.
