Mayor Jyoti Gondek reflects on 2022, looks ahead to the new year yyc yyccc

”It was that open dialogue and that conversation around, ‘I feel like I’m out on my own,’ that we changed and people realized how they could work better together. And as a result we’ve had call diversion become a real thing at Calgary Police Service. We’ve had mobile crisis response teams go out to not only take care of the person in crisis, but the community around them. We’ve learned how to work together better.
“If you talk to the representatives from Vancouver, their biggest push was safe supply. And if you talk to prairie mayors, one of the biggest things that we kept bringing up was making sure that we are using Indigenous ways of knowing and Indigenous ways of care to actually reach out to people in positions of vulnerability.
“We said, ‘You’re expecting us to apply for different tranches of funding to tackle different problems. We’re trying to tell you that all of those problems intersect together and they play out on the streets of our city. And downtown tends to be, you know, the most vulnerable place.’”, which has seen 777,000 square feet of office space transformed into apartments. She said there’s an opportunity for the city to demonstrate how to strengthen itself.
