Democrat Kris Mayes is ahead of Republican Abe Hamadeh by 510 votes for Arizona attorney general with all ballots counted. A recount looms next.

With all the votes in the state counted, Democrat Kris Mayes leads Republican Abe Hamadeh by 510 votes in the race to become Arizona's next attorney general.As the difference in votes between the candidates is below 0.05%, the race automatically will go to a recount. The recount will begin after Dec. 5, when the Secretary of State's Office certifies the results.it will take until the end of December to complete.

Mayes had a 148-vote lead over Hamadeh at 5 p.m. Nov. 17, although her lead had dropped at one point to 55 votes. Hamadeh, a political newcomer, was dogged by revelations about his past that emerged after the Aug. 2 primary. Assisted by, Hamadeh beat out five other candidates in the crowded Republican primary field.

Hamadeh worked for about three years as a deputy Maricopa County attorney and tried cases in court. The Republic was unable to verify how many in total, but in a one-year period, documents show he took five trials to court as either lead or second prosecutor.
