Max Verstappen secured his 16th win of the season at the Mexico City Grand Prix, while a first-corner crash affected his teammate Sergio Perez's home race. Verstappen's victory solidified his lead in the championship, with Perez now barely holding onto second place. Verstappen's quick start allowed him to pass the Ferraris and maintain control throughout the race.

Red Bull driver Sergio Perez of Mexico, front, crashes with Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc of Monaco at the start of the Formula One Mexico Grand Prix auto race at the Hermanos Rodriguez racetrack in Mexico City, Sunday, Oct. 29, 2023. MEXICO CITY — Two perfect starts made for a record 16th win of the season for Formula One champion Max Verstappen on a wild Sunday for Red Bull at the Mexico City Grand Prix .

This time, Verstappen’s quick bolt off the starting line allowed him to squeeze between the two Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz and into the lead. Like Verstappen two years ago, Perez tried to pass Leclerc with a sweeping move from the outside that pinched the Ferrari between himself and the other Red Bull car. Verstappen said he understood the temptation to try such a move.

Leclerc said he felt bad for Perez, but added, “It's life. It damaged my car and it ended the race for Checo ... I really didn’t do it on purpose, but I had nowhere to go."
