We chat with Matthew Rhys about PerryMason season 2, including the aftershocks of season 1, the HBO show's perspective on justice, and missing detective legwork:

After nearly three years off the air, HBO's Perry Mason is back for season 2 as Matthew Rhys sets off to solve another crime in 1930s Los Angeles. Dejected by the mistrial at the end of season 1, Perry has chosen to forgo criminal cases in favor of civil suits, much to the dismay of his partner Della Street and investigator Paul Drake .

Matthew Rhys: Sort of. Yes and no, which I was very relieved about. When you meet Mason for the first time in the second season, it's not quite where we left off. The time period is relatively short, it's about six months between both seasons. Matthew Rhys: No, I think it is. I think in his heart, Mason is that investigator. That's what he does best. Or sometimes his best lawyer-ing work comes from his grounding as an investigator. It's all one big investigation to him, ultimately. And I think that's when he does his best work. The real kind of legal eagle of them is Della. And you see in season 2, that's when she begins to really flourish and shine as that lawyer. But yeah, there was a lot I missed.

At times, I thought he becomes more closed because of what he's harboring. And other times, he's opening up more because he has to, because of the very means of what he does and how people rely on him. His characteristics are kind of evolving and opening as he's fumbling through life which is so exciting to play.

It's certainly an exploration that, like I said, is possibly not the most inspiring one. Because you notice that it still goes on, but hope is born from Mason's decisions in a way that you can either do something about it, or you can't, or you don't. And he chooses to. And I think, if anything, I hope that propels something.
