Matthew Fowler waits in the dock at provincial courtroom No. 2 for Judge Phyllis Harris to enter after a break in proceedings at his preliminary inquiry Monday, Feb. 13. TELEGRAM FILE PHOTOST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Accused shooter Matthew Fowler pleaded not guilty to 19 charges at his arraignment Wednesday, March 1, and is headed to trial next January.
Fowler, 31, stood in the dock at Newfoundland and Labrador Supreme Court in St. John’s as Chief Justice Raymond Whalen asked if he was familiar with the charges against him.His lawyer, Jon Noonan, entered not guilty pleas to all the charges on his behalf. In the meantime, he’s scheduled to return to court March 9 for a detention review, a hearing brought forward in the case of an accused in custody whose trial has been delayed for more than 90 days.
Fowler was committed to stand trial, after a preliminary hearing two weeks ago, on charges related to two shootings in Conception Bay South Sept. 22. The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says Fowler was involved in targeted incidents on Uplands Road in Chamberlains and Greeleytown Road in Foxtrap, during which two men were shot and suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
After issuing an advisory for Avalon Peninsula residents to stay inside and for local schools to go into lockdown, RNC officers arrested Fowler that day by using a spike belt to stop the vehicle he was driving on St. Thomas Line.It has been our privilege to have the trust and support of our East Coast communities for the last 200 years.
