We chat with theSecretKingdom director Matt Drummond about crafting his original fantasy film, the multiple behind-the-scenes roles he took on, how he collaborating with the cast, and his plans to make the story into a series:
From Paramount’s Saban label comes a new fantasy film, The Secret Kingdom. The movie is currently available to see in theaters and stream on digital platforms and follows siblings Peter and Verity on their whirlwind adventure. After moving to a remote town, the pair discover a secret land underneath their bedroom floor. Peter and Verity are whisked away to the Below and tasked with fighting an ancient evil that has plagued the kingdom for ages.
I couldn't help but notice that a lot of your previous work involves dinosaurs! This was a dragon, but as someone who is fond of these giant creatures, I'd love to know what draws you to the genre. Matt Drummond: I was the DOP as well, so I do a lot of different things. You could call me a bit of a control freak, I suppose. [Laughs] I really think that if you're going to be involved in film, and in particular, independent film, that you need a working knowledge across all departments. And that helps for us, as an independent production company, to keep budgets within reason and put a lot of wow factor on the screen.
This entire film is just a visual effects masterpiece. From the animals to the scenery, I was blown away. What was the most difficult aspect to create? It's very amusing. My editor and I would just sit there laughing at some of this stuff. It was very funny. Darius Williams, who is the voice of Pling, is just masterful with some of his stuff. We got him to do a bunch of promo, and on the TikTok channel, we actually have him interviewing his character, Pling, and Pling's very nervous about doing PR. It's wonderful and it's great fun. So that's the other thing about the technology.
