Matt Carpenter’s resurgence is a reminder that hard work can defeat expected outcomes. He is less than two months into his tenure as a Yankee but is building a case as one of the best cast-off signings the franchise has seen, writes lindseyadler.
Carpenter did not arrive in New York banking on his track record, hoping he’d be able to rediscover something he’d lost in his final years in St. Louis. Carpenter has three tools that he could have leaned on to believe he could change his results by taking the same old approach: He’s left-handed, has exceptional bat-to-ball skills and is a good defender.
Carpenter hit .275/.379/.613 with 6 home runs in 91 plate appearances in Triple A with the Rangers, and when he learned they would not have a spot for him at the major-league level, he asked for his release. He waited at home in Fort Worth for another opportunity, which came a week later when the Yankees signed him to a major-league deal. His contract is for $1 million over a full season, prorated for his time spent on the roster, a source told, more than the major-league minimum of $700,000.
“He’s really excited to be here every day, really excited to be a part of that team,” manager Aaron Boone said after the Yankees’ 14-1 win over theon Saturday. “He just kind of fit in right away. A guy with his track record and experience, the kind of career he’s had, just a willingness to kind of do whatever has been asked. He’s done that and more, and we’re lucky to have him right now.”
So far this season, Carpenter has spent as much time in the outfield as he has in the infield. He was tasked with manning left field at Fenway Park. His breakout has allowed the Yankees to reduce outfielderCarpenter said Saturday night the changes he needed to make to find success again were “a pretty even split” between physical and mental.
