Bus drivers in the Mat-Su declared a strike today after transporting students to school, leaving parents responsible for picking up kids across the district at the end of the day.

Bus drivers in the Mat-Su declared a strike Tuesday morning after transporting students to school, leaving parents responsible for picking up kids across the district at the end of the day.

“Student safety is the top priority for school bus workers and continual issues surrounding buses have not been addressed by Durham,” union officials wrote. “Hours of planning and consideration were spent before the decision of when to start the strike. Because of this, our school bus drivers made sure that all students were dropped off at their respective schools prior to the strike beginning.

Three northern schools in the district — Su Valley Junior/Senior High School, Talkeetna Elementary and Trapper Creek Elementary — were on a remote learning day Tuesday due to icy roads. Also, district officials said, Northern Valley and Glacier View schools served by Bunker and Bunker buses are unaffected by the strike.
