Franklin County state senator declares he will not seek the seat currently held by U.S. Sen Robert P. Casey, who is seeking re-election to a fourth term.
Republican state Sen. Doug Mastriano, the conservative state senator from Franklin County who helped upend Pennsylvania’s Republican politics in 2022 but had trouble translating that into broader general election support, is formally out of the 2024 race for U.S. Senate.
He also promised to support the eventual Republican nominee for the upcoming election for the Senate seat currently held by U.S. Sen. Robert P. Casey, a Democrat. The swing-state seat is seen as one of a handful that majority control of the Senate will hinge on in 2024. The immediate benefactor of Mastriano’s annoucement is David McCormick, the former U.S. Treasury official for former President George W. Bush and hedge fund leader who moved back to Pennsylvania to seek a U.S. Senate seat in 2022, only to lose last year’s Republican primary in a photo-finish to Dr. Mehmet Oz.
Clearly, the safer political path for Mastriano would be to seek re-election next year to a second full term as a state senator. Mastriano represents Franklin and Adams counties in the state Senate, and that seat is also up for election in 2024. He won election to his state Senate seat in a special election a year later, but pandemic politics - and the audience that created for politicians concerned that basic personal freedoms were being trampled by an overreaching government pushing the communal good - quickly made him a statewide name.
