Brooks Koepka, a four-time major winner, surged to the top of the leaderboard in the second round of the Masters on Friday.

.

Koepka was smiling, which is not something he has done often after a golf round these days. Injuries had left a player who had an almost robotic mastery of the sport from 2017-19 looking vulnerable, even broken. His appearance on Netflix’s Full Swing made it clear that he wondered when, or even if, Koepka would chase greatness on a golf course again.

He still can, too. Koepka is only 32. If he holds onto his lead at conditions deteriorate this weekend with heavy rains expected, he will become just the 20th player in golf history with five or more majors, joining the likes of Byron Nelson, Seve Ballesteros and fellow LIV defector Phil Mickelson with, to borrow metaphor from team sports, one for the thumb.

“It doesn’t bother me,” said C.J. Covelli, a Virginia native who followed Koepka around the back nine. “I mean, I like him back on the Tour so he’d be battling out every week.” “Honestly, yeah, probably, if I’m being completely honest,” he said. “I think it would have been. But I’m happy with the decision I made.”
