The Public Interest Advocacy Centre , an Ottawa consumer watchdog group, said Rogers’ “particularly egregious” outage warranted a public inquiry by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission , the industry’s chief regulatory agency, especially in light of previous outages across Rogers networks last year.
“You have a really big company that a ton of people have come to rely on in their day-to-day lives, so it acts as a single point of failure,” said Ben Klass, a PhD candidate at Carleton University’s School of Journalism and Communication.The outage comes as Rogers is trying to win regulatory approval of its $26-billion takeover of Shaw Communications Inc. Ottawa’s Competition Bureau is trying to block the merger, arguing that the deal would only strengthen Rogers’ monopoly.
“We acknowledge the impact our outage is having on your life,” the company said in a statement on Friday. While there was nothing to suggest Friday’s outage was caused by a cyber attack, Stephanie Carvin, international affairs professor at Carleton University, said the widespread disruption that ensued shows just “how vulnerable our systems are.”
