The blaze began along Route 555 in the village of Grant before spreading up onto Winslow Hill, the primary destination of spectators traveling to view the state's free-roaming wild elk.
The fire, which burned a couple of miles east of the Elk Country Visitor Center near Benezette, first drew crews from at least 19 fire companies from six counties to the blaze around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but the Pennsylvania Game Commission was forced to respond to a rumor that the agency had lost control of a prescribed fire that led to the Winslow Hill blaze.
“The fire in Centre County, SGL 60, might have been caused by a controlled burn because a controlled burn was conducted nearby the previous day.”The acreage burned has not been determined for either fire.
