BOSTON — Massachusetts Democrat Elizabeth Warren won a third term in the U.S. Senate on Tuesday, further cementing her role as a key progressive voice in the state and on Capitol Hill.
Warren first burst onto the national scene during the 2008 financial crisis with calls for tougher consumer safeguards, resulting in the creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Warren said she was happy being a teacher, researcher and self-described “policy nerd” and hadn’t considered running for public office until her first bid for the Senate in 2012.
“I’m blessed to have escaped the poverty of my childhood and achieved the American Dream." he said. “When you come from that kind of life, when you get to run against one of the most powerful and influential people in Washington and hold your own on the debate stage — that only happens in America.” Although the candidates have taken similar stands on some issues, they tried to sharply distinguish themselves from each other.
