The state Republican Party contends the VOTES Act, a bill Republican Gov. Charlie Baker signed into law in late June after clearing the Democrat-controlled state legislature, violates the state constitution

Many of the voting options included in the new law were implemented during the height of the coronavirus pandemic and proved popular.

They maintain voters can only seek a mail ballot if they meet one of the exemptions spelled out in the state constitution, such as being out of town on election day or unable by reason of physical disability or religious belief to cast their vote in person that day. Mass. GOP Chairman Jim Lyons said in the statement on the party website"We also have significant reasons to believe that mail-in voting is especially vulnerable to fraud. One need only look at the thousands of mail in ballot applications sent to wrong addresses in 2020 or the thousands marked undeliverable and returned."

"This is strictly out of the Trump playbook. Trump has consistently said he doesn't like vote by mail. He's told... he's admonished Republicans they have to get rid of it. They've been very effective in other states doing it. In limiting voter rights and especially as it affects minority people," Gavin told NBC10 Boston and NECN.
