Maserati might be killing its V8, but rest assured the more things change, the more they stay the same...

Much has changed in the four years since Brave Pill first set sail for the storm-wracked part of the car-buying ocean where high value meets high risk. Yet much has also stayed the same, with this week’s Pill standing as glorious proof that it is still possible for those with stout hearts and a berserker’s attitude to danger to bag some proper bargains.

Pessimists might well take a more cynical view, that it is entirely possible for any of this M139 generation QP to have run through considerably more than eight grand in maintenance and repairs in the last three years, before you factor in the need to pay for road tax, insurance and 15mpg-worth of super unleaded. But who wants that sort of buzzkill in the face of an Italian near-exotic with a V8 engine for less than you’d have to pay for a shabby ULEZ-compliant Transit.

Gearbox aside, there was – and is – a huge amount to like about the M139. It’s got proper space for four, it handles well enough to have won a few comparison tests in period and it has a presence very few of its contemporaries can match. Similarly aged Audi A8s and Merc E-Classes just look old these days; the Quattroporte still has a gangsterish swagger that still turns heads.
