Mary’s Mexican Shop, a family-run store, has expanded and moved to a new location in Nanaimo with a contribution from the Mexican government. Initially opened as a 250-square-foot store on Nicol Street two years ago, the store has moved and expanded twice to meet the increasing demand for authentic Mexican ingredients. The store's origins trace back to a personal need when the owner's husband couldn’t find specific Mexican ingredients on the island.
Now, the shop not only serves as a cultural hub for Mexican food lovers and recent Mexican immigrants but also receives support from the Mexican government, which has lent pieces of art to decorate the store
