Captain America is often accused of being just a gimmick in comics and movies. But that jab couldn't be more wrong, as he has consistently proven.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Warning: Spoilers for CapWolf and the Howling Commandos #1!Marvel is reminding readers of a scathing criticism made against Captain America in the MCU, while also reminding fans why it's not true. Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will recall that when characters want to call out Cap, they suggest he's nothing more than a gimmick.
The same sentiment gets applied to Steve in CapWolf and the Howling Commandos #1 by Stephanie Phillips, Carlos Magno, Espen Grundetjern, and VC's Travis Lanham. The story set in World War II sees Nick Fury put Steve in charge of the Commandos while he's out with an injury. However, this puts Steve in direct conflict with Commandos who think he's unfit to lead them.
Why This Captain America Criticism is Not True As established onscreen as well, there are too many moments in the comics that go to show that Steve's courage, determination, and other inner qualities are what make him a hero, not whatever super strength or abilities he was gifted following the Super Soldier experiment. This is a small, but subtle example showing how he's more than just a gimmick. He leaps out of the plane headfirst without a parachute in front of his brothers-in-arms.
Later on, Dugan extrapolates how he thinks the Captain America symbol and the man wearing it are only good for selling war bonds. Again, Dugan is disproved soon after when the team is launched into a werewolf attack that eventually leads to Steve becoming one himself. Once again showing how he's willing to self-sacrifice for the sake of the team, Steve urcges Dugan to kill him immediately, for the sake of protecting everyone else.
