Marni Soupcoff: Turns out we can provide timely, compassionate health care
The point really hit home for me this week, when I accompanied a loved one to a hospital for a diagnostic imaging session.
But I did not need a book this time. My loved one and I were the only people in the waiting room, so it was quiet and private enough for us to have a conversation. And anyway, she was called in for her scan within five minutes of her scheduled appointment — five minutes! My past mean wait time was an hour, and one clinic had a sign on the wall telling patients to plan for two-hour waits.
But I have always been very conscious of being hustled through a diagnostic assembly line, the overflowing waiting room both an unspoken disincentive to me asking any questions and an explanation for the technicians’ distracted faces.
