Liberal leadership hopeful Mark Carney announces his intention to renounce British and Irish citizenship, aiming for sole Canadian status. Carney believes a prime minister should hold only one citizenship.

Liberal leadership hopeful Mark Carney has announced his intention to renounce his British and Irish citizenships, leaving him solely a Canadian citizen. Carney, the former governor of the Bank of Canada, made the announcement at a leadership event in Oakville, Ontario, on Friday. He stated his belief that as prime minister , he should hold only one citizenship.

Carney, who was born in Canada, has held Irish citizenship for decades and became a British citizen in 2018, five years after becoming governor of the Bank of England. He explained that while he is not judging others who hold multiple citizenships, he believes it is important for the prime minister to represent only one country. \This decision comes amidst ongoing discussions about citizenship and political leadership in Canada. During the 2019 federal election, it was revealed that then-Conservative leader Andrew Scheer held American citizenship through his father. Scheer later discontinued the process of renouncing his American citizenship. A CBC News investigation also found that a significant number of parliamentarians had been born outside Canada and held citizenship from other countries. \Transport Minister Anita Anand, who attended Carney's event in Oakville, stated that his leadership experience and past work navigating economic crises played a role in her decision to seek re-election. Anand emphasized the need for Canada to be strong during a time of potential US tariffs and economic uncertainty. With a possible federal election in the spring, the Liberal party is in the process of selecting its next leader following Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's announcement that he will resign. The four remaining contenders are Carney, former finance minister Chrystia Freeland, former House leader Karina Gould, and former Liberal MP Frank Baylis. The Liberal Party will choose its next leader and Canada's next prime minister on March 9, with Parliament scheduled to resume on March 24
