Mariama Diallo on the paranormal presence in her film 'Master' and how being the only Black person in the room can feel like an act of survival.
So the first thing that I had in the story was the title. I found it so evocative, interesting, and multifaceted in terms of its multiple definitions. So that was the first little spark, and then I knew that I wanted to follow a character who was a Black woman who had been named “master,” in this academic sense, and see how that forced change on her or did not force change on her behavior and her perspective.
I think that as a survival tactic, when I was a college student, I was not taking in all of the dynamics that surrounded me, and acts of aggression that I was kind of trying to shield from, as I was just trying to graduate. So, it's not to say that Jasmine's experience mirrored mine very much, but that I knew that experience. And I knew that had I been a different kind of person or with a different personality, I could have had a very different college experience.
