Ten cats, three dogs and two snakes are on their way to being reunited with their families
“When she heard about the mass evacuations happening in the Northwest Territories — and especially in Yellowknife, where it’s really close to her heart because this is where her mom’s from — she decided to reach out to us,” Yellowknife veterinarian Michelle Tuma, an essential worker who has remained in the city, told Cabin Radio.
On board the flight were four cats from Hay River, six cats and three dogs from Yellowknife and two snakes from Great Slave Animal Hospital. Tuma, who told Cabin Radio she is the only practising veterinarian left in Yellowknife, estimated that about 30 animals still remain in the city and they are being cared for by friends of their owners. Local animal shelters have been evacuated and about 19,000 people have been confirmed evacuated out of Yellowknife’s 22,000 residents.
“The flight came up with supplies on it, we off-loaded those and loaded the animals, and then they were on their way,” said Tuma, who is also the Northern Canada Veterinary Specialist for VWB.
