The Newark-based People's Organization for Progress led a march from the Bridgewater police headquarters to the nearby Bridgewater Commons mall to protest the apparently disparate treatment of a Black teen by officers.

in the Somerset County township since Feb. 12, when Z’Kye, 14, got into a fistfight with another teen at the Bridgewater Commons mall. When the two Bridgewater police officers arrived, the other teen, an older boy who is not Black, was over Z’Kye. The officers peeled the two teens off each other, but officers only took Z’Kye to the ground and cuffed him.

Also speaking before the march, Lawrence Hamm, the chairman of the People’s Organization for Progress, read aloud the marchers’ demands. They demand the officers from the incident be suspended pending the outcome of an investigation by the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office, which is looking into the incident. The officers are currently on desk duty.

In addition, Hamm said Bridgewater should do a racial bias audit of its police department and draw up a plan to “root out racially biased and discriminatory practices.” The POP further demanded the township create a police review board and require racial bias and deescalation training and said Mayor Matthew Moench should apologize to Z’Kye and the entire Black community.

Once the group began to march, they chanted nonstop: “No justice, no peace.” “Say his name, Z’Kye Husain.” “I can’t breathe.” “Stop police brutality, in the Black community.” Simms and Z’Kye’s grandmother, Lori York, led with a sign that said “Justice for Z’Kye Husain” in all capital letters.
