With a plus-79 goal differential, the league’s fewest goals against 5-on-5, the top penalty killers and the second-best faceoff success, Boston is a long way from imploding. “They’ve been the most consistent in the NHL because they believe in what they’re doing and just go back out and do it again. The results haven’t been there for them recently, but that won’t change their mindset.
First place, theoretically, means home ice in playoffs against a wild-card entry. But while it’s good news the Bruins have stalled a bit, the traffic behind Toronto is intensifying. Tampa Bay, which is a far more realistic first-round opponent, beat Boston last week and sits five points back of the Leafs with three games in hand.Article content
