The Toronto Maple Leafs have recalled veteran goaltender Matt Murray from the American Hockey League ( AHL ) and demoted rookie Dennis Hildeby . Murray has been impressive with the Toronto Marlies this season, posting an 8-4-2 record, a .934 save percentage, and an AHL -best 1.68 goals-against average. The 30-year-old, who won Stanley Cups with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2016 and 2017, has been particularly strong recently, earning three victories and two shutouts over the past week.
This includes an 18-save performance in Wednesday's 3-1 road win against the Bakersfield Condors. Hildeby, on the other hand, has struggled in his limited NHL action this season, going 3-3-0 with an .878 save percentage and a 3.16 goals-against average. He allowed four goals on 18 shots in Wednesday's 5-1 home loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Leafs have been relying on Joseph Woll in goal since Anthony Stolarz underwent knee surgery last month. Stolarz, who had been splitting starts with Woll before his injury, is making progress in his rehabilitation and is back on the ice. Murray, who signed with Toronto for the 2024-25 season at a US$875,000 salary after undergoing bilateral hip surgery in October 2023 that sidelined him for the entire previous season, made two starts for the Leafs in December. He had a 1-1-0 record with an .879 save percentage and a 3.54 goals-against average in those appearances.
