Just after the seven-minute mark of the opener between Toronto and the Columbus Blue Jackets at Centre Ice Arena, a noticeable divot developed at a spot near the boards, halting play. The extensive repairs and the need to get the Detroit-Dallas game underway as scheduled in the evening meant the teams went to their rooms, eventually moving to an adjoining pad and completing the match with two 26-minute periods.
Niemela said he also watched a lot of video on the shot releases of Auston Matthews, countryman Patrik Laine and Norris Trophy winning defenceman Erik Karlsson.Marty Walsh, executive director of the NHL Players Association, and assistant Ron Hainsey were in Columbus on Thursday to meet with Jackets players as part of their investigation into whether new coach Mike Babcock made an inappropriate request to view the personal photos on players’ phones.
The former Toronto coach, who was strongly criticized after his firing when it was found he asked forward Mitch Marner’s personal opinions of Leafs then revealed them to the whole team, maintains he only wanted the pics for Columbus team-bonding purposes, which was backed by captain Boone Jenner. The league itself is also looking into the matter.
