Canadian manufacturing sales continued their upward trend in December, increasing for the third consecutive month. Despite the positive overall growth, sales declined when adjusted for inflation. Wholesale sales, excluding specific categories, also experienced a slight decrease.

OTTAWA — Statistics Canada reports that manufacturing sales experienced a third consecutive month of growth, surging 0.3 percent to $71.4 billion in December. This increase was driven by 12 out of 21 subsectors showing upward movement, with petroleum and coal sales climbing 3.4 percent and food product sales increasing 1.9 percent. However, when adjusted for inflation, overall manufacturing sales declined by 0.8 percent in December.

In a separate release, Statistics Canada reveals that wholesale sales, excluding petroleum, petroleum products, and other hydrocarbons, as well as oilseed and grain, dipped 0.2 percent to $83.6 billion in December. Wholesale sales experienced contractions in three out of seven subsectors, including a 2.1 percent drop in the machinery, equipment, and supplies subsector and a 2.8 percent decline in the building material and supplies subsector.
