“A lot of things go into picking your future, and San Diego checked every box,” Machado says. He cites the team’s farm system, perfect weather and family-oriented environment fostered by the front office and ownership. The biggest force in baseball economics right now is local TV deals, and the Padres are no exception. Their long-term agreement with Fox Sports paid roughly $40 million last season, and the team owns an estimated 20% of Fox Sports San Diego. Star players and winning teams drive higher ratings, resulting in more ad revenue. Meaning Machado, a Gold Glove–winning infielder who has averaged 180 hits and 36 home runs a year for the last four seasons, is likely worth every penny.
