A homeless man with an arrest history in New Jersey was taken into custody Monday morning after he was accused of fatally stabbing two men and seriously injuring a woman in a series of random attacks in New York City, officials said.

Neither Adams nor the other New York City officials who spoke during the press conference identified the man or his victims. He was identified only as a 51-year-old man with eight prior arrests in New York, including one for grand larceny in October.Hoboken police arrested him around the same time on two counts of criminal mischief, the outlet said.

NYPD Chief of Detectives Joe Kenny said during the press conference. The man then fled on foot on Ninth Avenue.Just over two hours later, at 10:27 a.m. at 500 East 30th Street at the East River, a 68-year-old man who was fishing was stabbed multiple times, he said. That man was also rushed to Bellevue Hospital where he died from his injuries.

A cab driver who witnessed what he thought was the woman being robbed called the police to report what he saw, followed the alleged assailant and led officers to his location where he was arrested, investigators said.
