Man sentenced to life in prison for 2020 shooting death of ex-girlfriend

while he was on probation for setting his ex-wife’s house on fire, according to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.

A Harris County judge sentenced Javon Gilbert, 31, after a four-day hearing to revoke the man’s probation and determine a sentence, officials said. Emmishae Kirby, 28, went missing Sept. 18, 2020, and her body was found Oct. 3 near Bear Creek Pioneers Park, ending the weekslong search. Gilbert had been accused in 2021 of fatally shooting Kirby and dumping her body in a field near the park, prosecutors said. At the time, he was serving eight years deferred adjudication probation after pleading guilty in 2015 to an arson charge. In 2013, he was accused of setting his ex-wife’s home on fire while she was inside, officials said.

The man’s probation was revoked after he was accused in the shooting death of Kirby and, because the arson charge also carried a life sentence, Gilbert was sentenced on that charge, prosecutors said. He will be eligible for parole after serving 30 years in prison but must remain on parole even after potentially being released.
