A man wanted in a 2020 Mundelein shooting death has been arrested in Mexico and returned to Lake County, authorities said Wednesday.

Botello, 20, is in the Lake County jail awaiting a bond hearing on two counts of first-degree murder.

Authorities issued a warrant for his arrest in 2020 for the killing of Gavile Jackson, 18, who was shot to death on May 28, 2020, in a parking lot in the 300 block of North Lake Street. Police said that the shooting may have resulted from a disagreement among a small group during a drug sale.Police said they used witness information and surveillance footage to ascertain Botello’s location in Mexico.

“Even though this case was no longer in the headlines, Mundelein police officers and investigators with the Lake County Major Crime Task Force were working behind the scenes to solve this crime. Thanks to their steadfast efforts, we now have a suspect in custody,” Mayor Steve Lentz said. “I applaud the teamwork between our dedicated investigators and the Lake County Major Crime Task Force. It required a ‘no quit’ attitude to take this suspect into custody, and I’m very proud of the collective effort,” Mundelein Police Chief John Monahan said.

In 2020, the victim’s mother said Jackson had recently moved to the Mundelein area from Arizona and did not yet know many people in the area.
