Man killed in jump from Coronado Bridge [Breaking]

A man stopped his vehicle mid-span on the San Diego-Coronado Bridge and jumped to his death Monday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

San Diego Harbor Police got the call from multiple witnesses at 11:12 a.m., said CHP Officer Jim Bettencourt. Paramedics performed CPR on the man, but he was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. “It was a quick response because it’s a highly traveled area,” Bettencourt said. The Harbor Patrol has a boat nearby.

The right eastbound lane of the bridge was closed for less than an hour during the investigation. No further information was available. More than 400 people have died jumping the 200-plus feet to the water since the bridge opened in 1969, according to a story earlier this year in the Union-Tribune.Caltrans recently released a report that examines about a dozen alternatives for some type of barrier, whether a fence, glass panels or a net, that could stop or reduce the number of suicides.
