Man jailed at George Bailey in Otay Mesa dies [Breaking]
A 56-year-old man jailed at George Bailey Detention Facility in Otay Mesa was found dead in his cell on Tuesday, sheriff’s officials said Wednesday.A cellmate found the man unresponsive and used an intercom to inform deputies, sheriff’s officials said.Deputies and medical staff provided medical aid until paramedics arrived to take the man to a hospital where he died about 2:35 p.m., officials said. His name was not released.
The cause and manner of the man’s death are under investigation. The county Sheriff’s Department did not say when the man was initially taken into custody or what crime he was suspected of committing. Last year, a record-high 18 people held in San Diego County jail died in custody. Earlier this year, the state auditor issued a sharply critical report prompted by 185 deaths in the county’s jails over 15 years.
The audit found the Sheriff’s Department failed to prevent and respond to the deaths, and called for the Legislature to force the department to make fixes. The Sheriff’s Department initially pushed back on the audit, rejecting several of its findings and methodology, but has since said it is working to make the changes.
