Phoenix police say the accident took place just before 2 a.m. near 43rd and Maryland avenues.Officers found an adult male suffering from serious injuries. The fire department pronounced him dead at the scene. His name has not been released.
Two people were in the other vehicle. The passenger, only identified as an adult female, was taken to the hospital with critical injuries. She remains in the hospital. The driver was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police believe the second vehicle was going south on 43rd Avenue when it crossed into the northbound lanes and struck the first vehicle head on. They believe impairment was a factor.
The driver of the second vehicle was taken into custody and is facing multiple charges, including manslaughter.
