Last Updated: Aug. 20, 2024 2:45PMSaanich police say a man was shot with a beanbag shotgun after officers received a report of a male “acting erratically, assaulting members of the public, and damaging private property.”
Police say attempts to de-escalate the man failed, prompting officers to deploy “the less lethal beanbag shotgun to take him safely into custody.” “From my understanding, he was making attempts to try to get into a vehicle, or several vehicles, in the area. There was also some contact with people that were in the area that were trying to intervene,” said Eassie.
“If you think of the beanbag shotgun as being something like an extended baton, but it’s something that we can apply from a distance. The purpose is to cause pain. It’s a pain compliance tool. We want that person to go down to the ground, where we can take them into custody safely.”Police say the man was taken to hospital for assessment, and the file remains under investigation. They add that no other information can be shared at this time.
