Details of the horrific crime were outlined Tuesday after Carlo Castillo Tobias, 22, pleaded guilty in New Westminster provincial court to the March 2021 killing of Ma Cecilia Loreto, 49.
On the day of the killing, Tobias was with a 15-year-old at the victim’s residence in New Westminster, according to an agreed statement of facts. When the victim returned to her home, the teen led her into a bedroom, where Tobias was hiding behind a door.The teen who has also been charged and will be tried separately but who cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, retrieved a kitchen knife from another room and stabbed the victim twice.
Shortly afterward, Tobias told his family about the incident before going to the Richmond RCMP detachment and confessing to police. He has been in custody since. “This was a senseless crime which has destroyed the family,” said the judge. “Words cannot describe the loss they have suffered and continue to suffer.”
