The man, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead on the scene. Police initially said the man had been fatally shot, but at a news briefing, D.C. Police Chief Robert J. Contee III said that investigators were still working to determine the precise nature of the wounds.Contee said an employee who worked at the Kennedy Center’s parking garage called police shortly after 7:30 a.m. to report an apparent shooting.

Contee said some of the man’s wounds appeared to be healing, as if they were old, and some appeared recent. He said the man seemed to have walked to the parking garage entrance, but it was unclear how he got to the scene initially or where he sustained his wounds. At the scene Friday, police had laid a white sheet to cover the body in a grassy area outside a parking garage. A woman strolled by, asking reporters if a famous person had arrived at the Kennedy Center.

Police said they are actively investigating the incident and closed down southbound Rock Creek Parkway, diverting traffic onto Virginia Avenue.
