He was pronounced dead at the scene, despite lifesaving efforts by Oakland police and paramedics.A motive for the shooting remains unclear. No arrests have been announced.
The killing represents the 99th death investigated as a homicide by Oakland police so far this year. Oakland police had investigated 105 homicides at this same point last year. The California Highway Patrol also has investigated five homicides within city limits this year.
