After faking his death, Nicholas Rossi, 34, was found near death from COVID-19 in a hospital in Scotland.

Rossi is wanted on fraud and sexual assault charges in at least two states, the Post reports. The Providence Journal reports he was convicted in 2008 on two sex-related charges for an assault at Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio. DNA from that case linked him to an assault in Utah, according to Utah County Attorney David Leavitt. Authorities believe he also might be linked to other sexual assaults, reports say.

“He certainly has gone to elaborate means to hide himself,” Leavitt tells the Post. “I’ve been practicing law, both as a prosecutor and a defense attorney for 30 years. … This is a first.” The Journal reports Rossi, who used the name Alahverdian in Rhode Island, was known in the state as a vocal critic of the state’s child welfare system. But his former foster mother tells the Journal that Rossi accrued about $200,000 in debt by fraudulently obtaining multiple credit cards and loans under her husband’s name. The Journal also reports he owes an Ohio woman to whom he was briefly married more than $60,000.

He is accused of faking his death from non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2020 in order to avoid the charges, then fleeing to Scotland. About a year after he faked his death, authorities realized he was still alive and began searching for him.that hospital workers in Glasgow discovered he was wanted by Interpol. Rossi is still awaiting extradition to Utah after being arrested last month, the Post reports.
