299 Queen Street West and the golden era of MuchMusic | SaltWirePICTOU, N.S. — John Douglas Cress, accused of murder after an incident in Thorburn, was denied bail during his first court appearance.

With bandages around his wrists, Cress was brought before Judge Bryna Hatt for a show-cause hearing. He was denied bail by the provincial court and will have to apply for bail at the Supreme Court level. “Jurisdiction for conditional release is for the Supreme Court,” said Crown lawyer William Gorman. “I am asking your honour to issue a certificate or a warrant, actually, that Mr. Cress be admitted into custody under the court of the law unless he files for Supreme Court release.”
