John Brittain, a 68-year-old retired civil engineer, appeared in court on Tuesday
PENTICTON, B.C. — It was the most ordinary of mornings in a quiet city nestled between two lakes that is used to such mornings.Josie Weightman and her teammates arrived in Penticton from Salmon Arm for a dance competition, still struggling to understand the murder of a 78-year-old man inside a church and the wounding of another in their home town on Sunday. Little did they know their Heales Avenue Airbnb rental in Penticton would be across the street from a murder scene.
That safe calm was shattered around 10:30 a.m. when gunshots rang out. A grey-haired man, who had apparently been doing some yard work for friends at a house they owned, lay dead in a side yard at the corner of Heales and Lakeview. “All the neighbours know each other, it’s a quiet street filled with happy people,” said Renee Myers. Had she been out painting her house, she would have been about 20 metres from the murder scene.
Large blocks of the Peach City were locked down. Nothing like it had happened before here, not on the quiet streets of two neighbourhoods in broad daylight. Close to 50 people, including officers flooding in from other detachments, took part at the crime scenes.
