Third teenager charged with second-degree murder | SaltWire #newsupdate #news #halifax #policeNEW HARBOUR, N.L. — A 46-year-old man has been arrested and charged after allegedly dragging an RCMP officer with his vehicle while speeding through a police checkpoint in New Harbour.
Officers conducting a routine traffic checkpoint at the intersection of Route 80 and Route 73 around 12:30 a.m. on April 28 stopped a vehicle and could smell a strong scent of burnt cannabis from inside the car.Police took the man's licence and asked him to turn off the car, which officers say he refused, instead speeding away and dragging an officer along the road.
The officer freed himself as the vehicle continued to speed away. Another police cruiser attempted to catch up to the car, but the pursuit was called off due to public safety.A roadblock was set up, the vehicle was stopped, and the driver was arrested for impaired driving, flight from police, assaulting a police officer with a weapon and dangerous driving.
The accused was taken to Carbonear General Hospital where a sample of his blood was obtained, and the investigation is ongoing to determine if charges of impaired driving are appropriateThe police officer was taken to the hospital, treated and released.
