A resourceful Courtenay resident ingeniously crafted a homemade Zamboni using household items to maintain pristine ice conditions on local ponds.
A Courtenay man has put his ingenuity to the test by creating a homemade Zamboni to maintain ice conditions on ponds near Cumberland. Helmer, a former plumber, repurposed everyday items like plumbing supplies, an old garbage can, a skateboard, and a beach towel to construct his unique ice resurfacer. PVC piping originating near the bottom of the garbage can allows for controlled water flow, regulated by a valve.
Helmer fills the garbage can with pond water using a hole drilled in the ice, initially employing a suction drill to fill a bucket and then emptying it onto the ice in rows. He squeegees these rows to smooth the surface, resulting in an enjoyable skating experience for locals. Kestrel Demarco, a resident enjoying the ice, commented on the quality of the homemade Zamboni's work. While acknowledging some imperfections, he praised the overall smoothness and the distinctly Canadian ambiance. Helmer acknowledges the delicate balance required when removing water from under the ice, as excessive extraction can cause settling and cracking. With recent cold temperatures producing ideal ice-making conditions, this weekend's anticipated rain is expected to signal the end of outdoor skating and pond hockey on Vancouver Island. Despite this, Helmer is already contemplating future improvements for his creation, envisioning the incorporation of a boiler to provide hot water capabilities
