'She was screaming my name, so I wasn't going to let her just sit there. I wasn't going to let my niece die,' said Derrick Byrd, who suffered second- and third- degree burns in the rescue.
A man in Washington state who was badly burned after running into a burning house to rescue his 8-year-old niece says he'd do it again in a heartbeat.."I'd rather get burnt than her. She's young. She's still got a lot of stuff going for her. She's a good kid."
It's unclear what sparked the blaze, which apparently began on the second floor. But when Byrd got outside and realized the children were still in the house, he jumped into action. He and his sister, Kayla Johnson, urged Mercedes and her brothers, Junior and Rory, to jump out the second-floor window into his arms.
Derrick Byrd suffered second- and third-degree burns running back into his home to rescue his young niece.Byrd is listed in serious condition at Harborview Medical Center, as are Mercedes and Junior. Johnson was treated and released, while Rory and the children's grandfather Dave Nelson and his great uncle, who were also in the home during the fire, escaped unharmed.

Dolphin Spends Amazing Vacation Swimming With StockbrokerORLANDO, FL—Describing the encounter as a once-in-a-lifetime experience she’ll never forget, local bottlenose dolphin Hazel reportedly recounted stories Tuesday from a recent vacation in which she got to go swimming with a stockbroker. “He was definitely shy at first, but with a little encouragement he swam right up next to me—the whole thing was so amazing,” said the dolphin, appearing excited as she described her “almost spiritual” encounter with the financial executive, whom she estimated was perhaps 40 years old and weighed as much as 180 pounds. “And he was just chattering away the whole time. It’s like they have their own little language. You have to wonder what’s going on in their heads and whether it’s true that they’re almost as intelligent as we are.” The dolphin added that while she ultimately enjoyed her experience, she was disappointed that she wasn’t allowed to actually ride the stockbroker.
