Man arrested, accused of setting fire in Santee riverbed [Breaking]
Sheriff’s deputies arrested a 27-year-old man on suspicion of setting a fire in a Santee riverbed early Monday, a sheriff’s lieutenant said.
Deputies responded to a report of a fire in a brushy area off Town Center Parkway near Cuyamaca Street around 2:45 a.m., said sheriff’s Lt. Matthew Carpenter. When deputies arrived they saw smoke and flames in the riverbed, which is frequented by unhoused individuals, the lieutenant said. A man who was in the area admitted to starting the brush fire and said he started one earlier in the week as well, Carpenter said.The fire burned a patch of brush about 20 yards long before it was extinguished. No homes were threatened, Carpenter said.
